As we all know social networking is taking or has taken over the internet recently. I’m sure you’ve all heard enough of Twitter, Facebook, Myspace since everybody is using them from the President of the United States to the average cubicle worker. For the people who spend their time trying to make money online I think you should ask yourself whether Twitter and other social sites are actually helping your business, or are you just wasting time?
Are you social networking, or social notworking?
According to this TechCrunch post their increase of traffic from Twitter was less valuable than the traffic that they hard earned from Twitter before they were featured on the front page. Another thing I’d like to mention that if you’re one of those people like myself who use Adsense, traffic from Twitter is not one of the best things for you.
If you’re hoping to use Twitter to drive more traffic to your sites and make bookoo dollars it’s not as easy as it seems. It actually takes time to build relationships with these people unless you already have a good reputation through an outstanding website or a blog. Besides, a good question to ask yourself is - “Is the traffic I get from Twitter worth the time I spend on it?”
Twitter haven’t even found out a way to monetize themselves besides donations (in which they received $20 million).
So are people who are using Twitter to fuel their businesses wasting their time? Could we be spending our time finding more valuable sources of traffic? Are we just social notworking?

Social media is all about what YOU make it. Some people enjoy rambling and others enjoy networking, few can manage both task at the same time though.
But for the people who want to spend their time making money online…is twitter worth their while or should they concentrate on what they are doing?
I believe it is worth the time. All though you cannot directly monetize twitter you can monetize the traffic by directing it to a blog/site.
It also helps to communicate with ppl you probably would not have talked too. A simple Retweet from a person with a large following can do wonders for traffic to your site.
True story but will the traffic be worthwhile when it comees to raising your revenue, or is twitter traffic just empty meaningless traffic?
Could your time be spent better article marketing – doing seo or other targeted traffic techniques?
There is no “meaningless” traffic in my book. The more my site is exposed the better. Granted not everybody may find your site useful but odds are somebody will and if you get just one sale/subscriber/comment via twitter traffic it was worth it in my book.
Everything you both are saying are correct of course, but there’s only so much you could do in a day or a week. If something isn’t working, or bringing the traffic you want to your site, then spending your time elsewhere would benefit you.
If your using twitter and its not doing what you want, that’s really wasting time then, is the extra traffic good ? of course it is, like you said Mike B, ” The more my site is exposed the better ”
But if there’s 3 options of bringing traffic, and your using 2, and one of them isn’t doing what you want, obviously one of the options could be a waste of time compared to the 3rd one.
Nice read by the way.
Agreed George A…Man I wish I still had time to play MLG I’d definitely join one of your competitions.
